Why Community Input Matters

Local journalism is better when it includes community voices. We believe the future of local journalism lies in forging deep and meaningful connections between residents and reporters.

Newsrooms need to rebuild trust with residents, and journalists need to hear how their coverage affects the community. This is especially important in communities of color, which media outlets too often have misrepresented, ignored and harmed.

When journalists and community members meet face to face, everyone involved gets a chance to discuss local challenges and move toward solutions. That's why the News Voices campaign organizes forums that bring together journalists and residents to discuss local needs and underreported issues.

Strong connections between media outlets and readers benefit both groups: Newsrooms can expand their audiences, deepen local engagement and find new sources. Communities can tell reporters about the issues they care about most and help create the kinds of local media they need.

Community input from these gatherings is the first step in building lasting collaborative projects. Here are a few things community members and journalists are doing through our News Voices campaign:

  • Brainstorming ways in which residents can take part in newsgathering
  • Hosting their own community forums to highlight local concerns
  • Creating joint storytelling projects to lift up community voices
  • Mobilizing community members to advocate for policies to support strong local reporting
